Leadership and situational awareness - show the direction or give the pace behind the workers?

The same text can be found in Finnish on my blog (April 2015) "Johtajuus ja tilannetaju - suuntaa edellä näyttäen vai tahtia takana määräten?"

I found the below quite provocative image on social media:

To be the Boss, leader or instructor? The picture is a aggravating generalization but a good starting point for discussion - what is the director's position or place in the organization?

I have often compared the management to teaching. A teacher who gets along well with a group of students and also in a teacher's room, he probably also can manages in management. A good teacher (= director) manages motivation and constructive interaction among the pupils. A good teacher (= director) can read pupils' mind and their own situation in a sense, through which he is able to position his own place and role in relation to the pupils. Good teaching (= leadership) is active presence and life in interaction. A good teacher (= director) is interested in pupils (= personnel) and he has sincere desire to help his pupils (= personnel) to succeed. That is why teaching (= management) is intensive and hence occasionally mentally hard work.

The above picture of view can be said that both situations are correct and justified in a particular stage of operation or organization leadership styles. Quote John Dewey's idea of interaction can talk about balance of control and guidance, which consists of refined targeting. We can talk about among other example, order, delegation or trust. CEO Jari Haapaniemi  (Priiffari Ltd) kept our management team some about year ago an excellent education, where he presented a pattern of situation management - situational awareness.

Situation Management Model, by Jari Haapaniemi (Blanchard and others quoting)

The control and the amount of aid are high when the commitment and task management employees are low. The Director has to understood to be more conscious and more intensely in the presence of the employee's daily lives. This is particularly true of the new front and in organizational change. In this case, directors skills put to the test: what kind is sense of the situation, the ability to listen, to throw oneself, to manage content and create a common view. The Director have to carry on and if necessary show an example. When the task management grows, so does the feeling of security as well as employee commitment. The manager can move aside, to assign tasks, to delegate, to trust and enjoy together with the organization's successes, remembering intervention also like to thank success.
